FACTS

ADDITIONAL INFO and ACTIVITIES
Sheng Qi is probably best known for his act of personal defiance following the events in Tiananmen Square in June 1989: he cut off the little finger of his left hand.Since then, he has incorporated the image and concept of this self- mutilation into his work, which includes photography, painting, sculpture and performance art. His recent work continues in the vein of subtle but firm subversion and quiet political protest. My work has always been controversial. People either like it or feel uncomfortable... My work is not for entertainment. It is not to give comfortable feelings and pleasures. My work is always like a protest, like a double-edged sword, pointing in both directions - with an international outlook and also at problems in China.
He led one of Chinese contemporary art's earliest performance art group; Concept 21.But only in 1989, did he drastically fluster people's mind, when he chose to use his body as a field of protest.Reportedly distressed by the massacre of Tiananmen Square, Sheng Qi chopped-off the pinky on his left hand and buried it in a flowerpot, which remained in Beijing during his European exile. He returned to China in 1998, convinced that he still has much more to say about his homeland, but come back to Great Britain. His radical gesture was his definite starting point to numerous contestations and questionings on China's omnipresent old haunting ghosts that he today decides to crystallize and demystify in his paintings.
When I cut off my finger, I felt betrayed. It’s like you know someone for 20 years then one day you discover he’s a total liar. It’s like the church falling down. You don’t know what to believe, you are totally...you feel like killing yourself, because everything you believed before is just worthless. Life feels worthless. - SHENG QI
